If you’re one of the stay-at-home moms and dads in Honolulu, HI, you probably find it difficult to get to the gym. You may be remotely working besides being responsible for the kids. Finding time to get to the gym is next to impossible. It makes finding workouts to do at home the best way to achieve exercise. When you exercise at home, you ensure you include exercises for all types of fitness: balance, flexibility, endurance, and strength.

What will your workouts be like?

When you’re creating your workouts, you need to ensure that you include all forms of exercise. If you push hard on strength-building one day, wait 48 to 72 hours until you work the same muscle groups. That provides recovery time when the real magic takes place. You don’t need equipment. You can do bodyweight exercises or use water bottles or jugs as weights. If you need light weights, soup cans work well. You don’t have to do all the exercises at once. You can break it down into shorter ten or fifteen-minute sessions you do throughout the day.

Create a bodyweight circuit.

You can maximize your workout by creating a circuit and cutting the rest time between circuits. You can combine almost any group of bodyweight exercises. Warm up, then do jumping jacks. Move to squats, push-ups, and butt kicks. Rest for a minute or less, redo the circuit, or move to the next circuit. It can include burpees, toe touches, pull-ups, and squat jumps. Adjust the amount of rest between circuits and the exercise reps and the number of circuits based on your fitness level.

Make any workout a HIIT—high intensity interval training—workout.

HIIT isn’t a specific workout but a way of doing any exercise. It alternates between exercising at peak intensity and then at a recovery pace. It’s often used to increase the benefits of running. You can use this with traditional calisthenics, walking, bike riding, running, or other exercises. You can create a HIIT strength-building workout to make it a cardio workout, too.

  • Start each session with warm-up exercises and end with a cool-down session. Doing both may take a few minutes onto your workout. They’re worth it since they help prevent injury and boost recovery.
  • Schedule your workout. Your at-home life may be more chaotic than at the office, but scheduling can help. Exercise at the same time each day to create a habit and ensure you do it.
  • You can include your children in your workout. Lifting a baby above your head works your arms. Having a toddler sit on your back while you do push-ups increases the difficulty. Older children can join you in the exercises.
  • Using the correct form for each exercise is vital to safety and benefits. Start your exercises before a mirror until you have the form conquered. Take it slowly until you have a full grasp of form.
